An Ironman Finish—And the Lessons It Taught Us

July 29, 2025

Z2’s Max Jaffe crossed the finish line at Ironman Lake Placid, 140.6 miles of swimming, biking, and running through the Adirondacks. His time? A blistering 9:16.

Out of 2,240 participants, Max finished 8th overall, placing him in the top 1%. Within his age category, there were 236 competitors, earning him the 4th overall spot and most noteworthy an invitation to the Ironman World Championships in Nice, France (the top 9 finishers out of 236 got an invitation).

But beyond the physical feat, Max’s race mirrored something deeper, the same principles that drive our approach at Z2. Here’s how endurance and investing align:

1. Discipline Wins

Ironman training isn’t glamorous. It’s early mornings, relentless consistency, and doing the hard work—day after day. At Z2, we invest the same way, quiet discipline over chasing headlines.

2. Long-Term Thinking

You can’t "wing" an Ironman. Success demands a tailored plan, patience, and playing to your strengths. Similarly, we structure portfolios for long-term growth, not short-term sprints.

3. Risk Management is Everything

Push too hard on the bike, and you’ll collapse on the run. In investing, we constantly monitor risk, adjust allocations, and protect the downside—because endurance isn’t just about speed; it’s about sustainability.

4. Data-Driven Strategy

In racing: heart rate, power zones, nutrition. In investing: valuation, diversification, downside protection. Performance isn’t guesswork—it’s a series of informed, intentional decisions.

5. Mental Resilience

Every Ironman hits a wall. So do companies. The key? Staying calm, have a plan, adapt quickly, and keep moving forward. That resilience—the kind that carries you 26.2 miles after a 112-mile bike—is the same mindset that builds durable portfolios.

Steady. Intentional. Data-driven. That’s the Z2 philosophy.

Z2 Investment Management - Our name reflects our approach: Endurance athletes train using heart rate zones. Zone 2, or Z2, is the optimal heart rate zone where athletes train for long-term and sustained endurance gains. Z2 is not focused on quick returns, but long term gains. We understand value is created by operating efficiently, putting in a steady effort day-in and day-out to achieve our goals.

Congrats to Max on this incredible achievement—and see you in Nice!
